ELKHART, Indiana — A woman who was a benefactor for two small colleges has given $4.6 million to a northern Indiana charitable foundation.
Mary Elizabeth Walker established the gift with the Elkhart County Community Foundation. She died in December 2011. The Elkhart Truth reports (http://bit.ly/1fpN2EB ) that $230,000 will be granted this year.
Walker set guidelines for who will receive grants. Her alma mater, DePauw University in Greencastle; her church, Trinity United Methodist Church in Elkhart, and any youth-serving organization could be possible recipients. Walker's children will advise the fund.
She also funded and planned DePauw's Walker Arboretum and also was instrumental in the building of the Goshen College Music Center.
Walker's late husband owned the former Walker Automatic Heating.
