PIERRE, South Dakota — The South Dakota House Judiciary Committee has passed a measure to require transparency from the association that oversees high school sports and other activities.
The panel voted 12-1 Monday to support the bill.
It would hold the South Dakota High School Activities Association to the state's open government laws. The association would have to report annually to a legislative committee and open meetings and records to the public.
Supporters of the bill say the group operates with funds from public schools and should be held to the same requirements as those schools.
Opponents say the group has functioned well without these requirements for more than 100 years and it has adjusted policy to open meetings after hearing complaints.
The House will review the bill Tuesday. It already passed the Senate.
