LYNCHBURG, Virginia — A trial starts Monday in Lynchburg in the case of a suburban Richmond man accused of killing his mother-in-law.
Scott Christman Miles is charged with first-degree murder in the December 2012 beating death of 86-year-old Lynda Slocum in her Lynchburg home. She had been beaten to death.
The 50-year-old defendant was charged with her slaying about six months later.
The News & Advance (http://bit.ly/1fXrIrs) reports that the prosecutor said Miles was financially stressed and was seeking help from Slocum. Miles claimed he was with a friend and visiting his mother in Hopewell the night of the slaying, but cell records place him Lynchburg, according to court filings.
The prosecutor expects to call as many as 50 witnesses.
