Second season of cabaret performances announced

They came to the cabaret, old chum.

Hundreds attended each show, including a sold-out debut show in January.

And so Columbus Indiana Philharmonic has announced a second-season fall lineup of performers for the Cabaret at The Commons series.

Singer and pianist Carol Welsman, who has won top honors in her native Canada, will perform Aug. 13. She will present a mix of classic standards and original compositions ranging from jazz and swing to Latin, R&B and pop.

She won Pianist/Keyboardist of the Year at the 2006 Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards and was a nominee for Best Female Vocalist, Album of the Year and Best Pianist/Keyboardist in 2007. Four of her CDs have earned Juno Award nominations, the Canadian equivalent to the Grammy Award.

Laura Osnes continues the cabaret series with a show Nov. 19. Two-time Tony nominee Osnes has starred in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” plus “Bonnie and Clyde,” “Anything Goes” and “Grease.”

She also appeared in the one-night-only concert of “The Sound of Music” at Carnegie Hall and on television in “Sondheim: The Birthday Concert,” HBO’s documentary “Six by Sondheim” and the Kennedy Center Honors salute to Barbara Cook. In addition to being heard on several cast recordings, Osnes has two solo albums, “Dream A Little Dream: Live at The Café Carlyle” and “If I Tell You: The Songs of Maury Yeston.”

Margaret Powers, the Philharmonic’s executive director, said during the inaugural season that the concerts earned positive feedback not only for their entertainment value but also as an attraction to pre- and post-concert downtown eateries.

“Our first three cabarets in early 2015 drew large crowds even when the average temperatures were barely above zero, a clear indication that Columbus residents enjoy the close-to-home performances by world-class talent,” she said.

Cabaret at The Commons is a partnership between the Philharmonic and The Cabaret at The Columbia Club in Indianapolis.
