Letter: Stiffen local ordinance regulating feeding operations

Data collected by members of the CAFO Study Committee compares zoning ordinances of Bartholomew County against the ordinances of 39 other Indiana counties selected for online availability. I found it surprising that Bartholomew County’s zoning ordinance welcomes animal factories. It is easier to locate CAFOs here than any of the other 39 counties, based on setbacks from residential, schools, recreation (including Ceraland and golf courses) and churches.

Our county, with its high tourism, high rural population density and strong economic development has no business inviting CAFOs that employ so few and offend so many. I urge the county commissioners to stiffen up this ordinance and leave the CAFOs to counties with less to lose.
