Bartholomew County was ranked 13th among the state’s 92 counties in the direct and indirect impact of tourism, according to a study by Economic Research Associates of Chicago. Tourism trade in the county increased 11 percent from 1987 to 1989, compared with a national growth rate of 8 percent, and grew to more than $62.5 million in 1989.

The Columbus area’s 21 reporting firms employed 14,455 people in recent months, shattering the previous local employment record of 13,970, an increase of more than 11 percent in a year.
