Bloomington South edges East in opener

Columbus East dropped its season opener 4-1 to visiting Bloomington South in Monday.

JoJo Woolwine registered the only Olympians’ victory with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Conrad Schlegel.

Although it was 4-1, the match was close. At No. 3 singles, East’s Neeraj Pandita dropped a 6-3, 2-6, 10-5 decision to Matthew Velenis.

Alex Galle lost 6-1, 6-3 to Will Piekasky at No. 1 singles.

In No. 1 doubles, East’s team of Matt Furnish and Sammy Woolwine dropped a thrilling 6-4, 7-6, 7-4 match to Konner Shapiro and Luke Jager.

At No. 2 doubles, Daniel Kuhlman and Austin Guse of East lost to Christopher Piekasky and Nathan Pliske 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.

Panthers cruise in debut

MILAN — The Jennings County boys tennis team opened its season with a 4-1 victory against host Milan.

Owen Land had a terrific opener with a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Milan’s Jordan Burton.

Adam Jackson downed Brent Quatman 7-6, 6-4 at No. 2 singles and Avery Johnson defeated Jacob Laub 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

In No. 1 doubles play, the Milan team of Josh Bixler and Peyton Conn triumphed over Bailey Wilder and Luke Ertel 6-3, 6-3. Jennings County’s No. 2 doubles team of Justin Gasper and Austin Mills romped over Ethan Hunnent and Kaleb Baker 6-1, 6-0.

Lancers win opener

EDINBURGH — The Edinburgh volleyball squad downed visiting Jac-Cen-Del 25-8, 25-11, 25-16 on Monday.

The Lancers are 1-0. Edinburgh’s junior varsity won a 25-15, 25-10 decision.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Cougars runner earns first

SHELBYVILLE — The South Decatur boys cross-country team finished third in Division 2 of the Triton Central Early Bird Invitational conducted Monday at Blue River Park.

Indian Creek won the event with 32 points while Triton Central was second with 53. South Decatur had 65, followed by North Decatur at 78.

South Decatur’s Justin Clark was the boys Division 2 individual winner with a time of 17:38. North Decatur’s top runner was Daniel Dollinger in sixth at 19:25.

In the girls Division 2, Eastern Hancock won with 30 followed by Triton Central at 44 and North Decatur at 50.

North Decatur’s Megan Hoover won the girls Division 2 race in 21:06.
