Since the Mill Race Marathon began two years ago, Nicole Pence has traveled to the hometown of Indiana Gov. Mike Pence — only to run into someone who takes her for the governor’s niece.
“Same name, but that’s someone else,” said Pence, 29, referring to the 2002 Columbus North graduate and Indianapolis television journalist.
In its inaugural year, Pence made somewhat of her own name by placing second in the 5K run with a time of 21:24.1. This year, the Indianapolis resident tackled the half marathon.
“I like the small-town feel down here,” Pence said. “Just getting away from Indianapolis.”
While she said she has made the Mill Race Marathon a tradition in her life, Pence admits she’s using the experience as training for the Nov. 7 Indianapolis Monumental Marathon.
Her normal weekly training routine involves two workouts a week involving speed training, as well as one long run, she said.
