Columbus residents participate in flight to Washington, D.C.; receive welcome-home party

Six Columbus residents were among the more than 170 military veterans who traveled to Washington on Oct. 31 as part of the Indy Honor Flight 14.

The six were:

  • Warren Baumgart Sr.
  • Jim Boehmler
  • John Burgeson
  • Clyde Neal
  • Ed Resler
  • Bill Tackett

Indy Honor Flight is a nonprofit organization created solely to honor Indiana’s veterans for all their sacrifices, according to its website. It organizes free trips to Washington mainly for World War II veterans. They receive a celebratory homecoming and visit memorials, such as the World War II Memorial in their honor.

Veterans gathered at Plainfield High School on Oct. 30 for a meet-and-greet event that evening. They gathered at the school the next morning before departing for Washington then received a welcome-home party at the school the evening of Oct. 31.
