John L. Schroer, 82, of South County Road 300 West, Columbus, passed away at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday December 8, 2015, at Columbus Regional Hospital. John was born October 12, 1933, in Columbus, to the late Theodore and Irene (Burbrink) Schroer, and had lived his entire life in the Columbus area.

John graduated from Columbus High School with the class of 1951 and served his country in the U.S. Army. He retired from Cummins Engine Company and was a longtime area farmer. He was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church at White Creek and Indiana Farm Bureau.

John married Carolyn Jean Durkes August 16, 1959, and they have celebrated 56 years together. John and Carolyn were blessed with three children, Bryan J. (Linda) Schroer of Columbus, Joy Ellen (David) Harrison of Agoura Hill, California, and Susan Marie (Paul) Sokolowski of Clearwater, Florida. John also leaves behind five grandchildren, Abby Schroer, Tom Schroer, Emily Harrison, Ryan Harrison and Leland Sokolowski.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Norman Schroer, and a sister, Velma Enzinger.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 12, 2015, at St. John’s Lutheran Church at White Creek with Pastors Ed Keinath and Matthew Jung officiating. Following the service, John will be laid to rest in the church cemetery. Friends are invited to a time of visitation from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home, 3855 25th Street, Columbus, Indiana, and an additional time of visitation that will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the church.

The family has requested that memorial contributions in John’s memory be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church-White Creek Building Fund or to Trinity Lutheran High School.
