Valentine L. Karr, 86, of Columbus, died at 4:30 a.m. Thursday, February 4, 2016, at Silver Oaks Health Campus in Columbus.

Valentine retired from Cummins Engine Company after more than 30 years of service. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and St. John’s Masonic Lodge.

He loved his family and spending time with all of them. He was the type of person that whoever he met, people remembered him and his outgoing and loving spirit. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and traveling in the RV with his wife. They belonged to the Escapees RV Club.

A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Barkes, Weaver, & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Pastor Adam Carrigan officiating. Inurnment will follow at Garland Brook Mausoleum. Family and friends may call from 11 a.m. until service time Tuesday.

Memorial contributions may be given to Columbus Regional Hospital Foundation for the Kidney Dialysis Department.

Born Feb. 12, 1929, in South Haven, Michigan, Valentine was the son of Harvey Sheldon Karr and Anna Johanna Valkner Karr.

He married Thelma L. Clements April 4, 1953. She preceded him in death March 7, 2015.

Survivors include his children, Darlene (Daren) McIlwain of Columbus and Cheryl (Hugh) Jones of Columbus; grandchildren, Shannon McIlwain of Columbus, Brian McIlwain of Columbus, Kelli (Tom) Blackwell of French Lick, Indiana, Amber Jones of Indianapolis and Ashley Jones of Indianapolis; five great-grandchildren, Dillon and Cameron Blackwell, Jaydon Gilmore, Vincent and Jaxson McIlwain; and one sister, Elva Kay Williams of Florence, Oregon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a brother, Warndall Karr; and a sister, Alrose Shaw.
