Richard E. “Dick” Mahaffey, 93, of Bloomington, passed away on Saturday June 11, 2016, at IU Health Bloomington Hospital surrounded by his family. Dick was born December 1, 1922, in Bartholomew County and was the son of the late Harry and Catherine (Holland) Mahaffey. Dick married Velma (Nugent) Mahaffey and they were happily married for 73 years.

Dick was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Naval Air Force as a radio operator. He retired from RCA where he was a supervisor. After his retirement, Dick and Velma moved to a farm in Decatur County where he farmed. His interests and hobbies included fishing, bird hunting, boating and antique cars. He was a great story teller and loved watching his great-grandchildren at their sporting events. Dick was a member of the American Legion, Murat Shrine, Masonic Lodge No. 547 in Hartsville, Elks and Sherwood Oaks Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Velma Mahaffey of Bloomington; daughter, Sharon Belcher of Bloomington; sister, Barbara Brown (Robert) of Columbus; grandchildren, Shannon Webb (Steven), Natalie Clark, Nicole Van Sant (David) and Megan Holtsclaw (Danny), all of Bloomington; great-grandchildren, Cooper Webb, Ty Webb, Haylee Clark, Hayden Clark, Hudson Clark, Dillon Van Sant and Dane Holtsclaw, all of Bloomington; a sister-in-law, Sybil Mahaffey of Hope, Indiana; and several nieces and nephews.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Marsha Deckard; a brother, William Mahaffey; and a son-in-law, Chuck Belcher.

Services for Dick will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, June 16, 2016, at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third St., Bloomington. Tom Ellsworth will officiate the service and entombment will follow at Valhalla Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm. Wednesday June 15, 2016, and from noon until service time on Thursday at The Funeral Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children.
