EARLY LIFE: Born June 7, 1959, in Columbus. Grew up there and graduated from Columbus North High School in 1977.
PERSONAL: Married Karen Batten of Indianapolis in 1985. Three children: Michael, Charlotte and Audrey.
EDUCATION: He graduated from Hanover College in 1981 and earned his law degree from the Indiana University School of Law in 1986.
CONGRESS: Elected in 2000 to represent portions of eastern Indiana in the United States House of Representatives, serving through 2012. In Congress, served in leadership roles as chairman of the Republican Study Committee and chairman of the House Republican Conference.
GOVERNOR: Elected Indiana’s 50th governor Nov. 6, 2012, and was inaugurated Jan. 14, 2013.
