Three people have been shot, and one person has died, in a reported robbery and shooting in Greenwood this morning.
The incident began at 10:20 a.m. at a home at 509 N. Meridian St., which is in downtown Greenwood, Greenwood police said.
Greenwood Police Assistant Chief Matt Fillenwarth said shortly before noon that three people had been shot, and one person had died.
Two men who were shot ran from the scene and were tracked by a police dog and found at Greenwood United Methodist Church, which they likely came upon as they were seeking shelter from the cold and because one of them was injured, police said.
As police tracked them to the church on Madison Avenue, people at the church called police two report two men had arrived and were telling a a suspicious story about a car being broken down.
Police are sorting out each person’s involvement.
A man who was shot in the chest has died at an Indianapolis hospital, police said. Two men, shot in the abdomen and the leg, are being treated for their injuries.
A juvenile has also been taken into custody, police said.
The person who called 911 reported a robbery and police were given the description of a suspect vehicle. Police were told that shots had been fired, Fillenwarth said.
Officers found a matching vehicle moments later at County Line Road and Emerson Avenue, Fillenwarth said. A woman was taken into custody.
Police dogs were initially brought to the scene, and officers were on foot searching for all the people involved. By 11:15 a.m., police believe they had located everyone involved, and detectives were beginning to sort through what happened, Fillenwarth said.
Northeast and Isom elementary schools were on lockdown for less than an hour, but the superintendent said it the restriction had been lifted shortly after 11 a.m.
