Child dies after being run over by mom in ‘terrible accident’ in Johnson County

A child was killed in what police are calling a terrible accident at a Center Grove area home.

Just before 5:30 p.m. Thursday, sheriff’s deputies were called to a home in the 4700 block of Walker Street, off Smith Valley Road, where a child had been struck by a vehicle.

The 1-year-old girl, Ella-Lee Hammons, was struck when her mother was backing a vehicle down the driveway, making room for another vehicle to get out, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

The mother, Ashley Daudy, 27, tested negative for alcohol, which is standard procedure in a fatal crash, and police are calling the death a terrible accident.

Daudy told police she didn’t see the little girl behind the vehicle and accidentally struck her. The girl’s father, John Hammons, told police he thought all the children were near the house when Daudy was backing up the vehicle.

He saw his daughter on the ground and yelled for help. A neighbor came over to perform CPR until emergency workers arrived.

The little girl, who was about to turn 2 next month, was taken to Community Hospital South, but died of her injuries, including a head injury, the report said.
