BUTLERVILLE, Ind. — Police exchanged fire with a Jennings County man after responding to a domestic disturbance in Butlerville, police said.
Before police arrived, at least one shot was fired inside a home in the 5700 block of N. County Road 750 East in Butlerville, after which a female left the residence and went to a home nearby for help, said Sgt. Stephen Wheeles of the Indiana State Police.
Both State Police officers and deputies from the Jennings County Sheriff’s Department responded about 3:30 a.m. Saturday, when the lone male occupant at the residence exited, only to fire at approaching officers, Wheeles said.
Multiple officers with the two police agencies returned fire at Charles L. Mays, 25, of Butlerville, who retreated back into the home and refused to surrender, Wheeles said.
Contact was made with Mays throughout the day, although he remained barricaded for about 16 hours, until exiting the residence at 7:45 p.m. when he surrendered to police, Wheeles said.
