Firefighters called to engine fire in abandoned vehicle

Columbus firefighters extinguished a fire in an unoccupied vehicle near 10th Street and Cottage Avenue at 1:53 p.m. Friday.

Although the fire department was sent to the intersection, dispatchers told them it was possible the vehicle on fire was traveling north on Cottage Avenue, said Capt. Mike Wilson, Columbus Fire Department spokesman.

When firefighters located the vehicle near the intersection, they found the four-door car with smoke coming out of the engine compartment but no driver.

As firefighters put out the fire, Columbus police officers found what appeared to be engine parts as they traveled south on Central Avenue toward the car fire. They collected the parts and brought them to the scene, Wilson said. Columbus police are trying to determine the identity of the driver.

No injuries were reported. Cause of the fire was listed as mechanical and accidental, Wilson said. Agencies assisting included the Bartholomew County Emergency Operations Center and the Columbus Police Department.
