A variety show fundraiser for Columbus native and brain cancer patient Andrew Heimann generated a total of $42,000 Saturday at Mill Race Center in Columbus. The money will go toward medical costs not covered by his insurance.
Heimann, who operates an acupuncture practice in Miami, Florida, had hoped to fly home to Columbus for the event but was unable to do so. Due to his illness, Heimann has been unable to work for about a year.
In August, the 38-year-old 1997 Columbus North High School graduate was diagnosed with Grade IV glioblastoma multiforme brain cancer, an aggressive form of this disease. His specific tumor type does not respond to traditional treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation and generally requires alternative approaches, according to his doctors. Heimann is pursuing a new option offered by doctors at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City.
Local actress and dancer Charlotte Battin of Charlotte Battin Productions organized the event featuring local performers ranging from fellow actors to singers. She became friends with Stephen Heimann, recently retired Bartholomew Circuit Judge and Andrew Heimann’s dad, when she performed with the father a few years ago at Dancing With the Stars … Columbus Style, which Battin originated.
Saturday’s total reflects two separate $10,000 matching donations.
Battin said being able to be a part of the community’s generosity is “a wonderful feeling.”
People unable to attend still can donate to the cause by making checks payable to Andrew Heimann, in care of Stephen Heimann, 3710 Lakeside Drive, Columbus, IN 47203.
