The cause of a fire that destroyed two businesses in central Columbus on Wednesday remains unknown after firefighters worked more than three hours to contain the blaze.

The Columbus Fire Department was dispatched to Carpet Mania, 1428 10th St., at 12:25 p.m. after an initial 911 call was received that there was a fire in the building, said Capt. Mike Wilson, spokesman for the department. More than 40 firefighters were dispatched to the scene that included 11 individuals being called in who were off-duty at the time.

“When we had arrived, the fire was pushing out of the entryway and windows,” Wilson said.

The blaze eventually spread to CrossFit Retaliation.
