Quick Takes – March 24

Learning opportunity

Local residents have a great opportunity to learn more about current affairs and hot-button national and international issues by attending the Great Decisions series of programs in April and May at Mill Race Center, 900 Lindsey St. in Columbus.

The series featuring experts and instructors on various topics, including:

  • Global health
  • Russia
  • China (economic power and geopolitics)
  • U.S. defense budget

Sessions are scheduled for April 3, 10, 17 and 24, and May 1, 8, 15 and 22. The series drew about 65 people per session last year, making it one of the better attended series statewide. Remarkable efforts

The city had a lot to be proud of recently with its high school athletics. The Columbus Icemen won their fifth state hockey title March 10 by defeating Leo 4-0 in the 2A championship game.

The same day, Columbus East’s Adi Minor won the vault and uneven bars titles at the IHSAA state gymnastics meet at Ball State University, and tied for second in the all-around competition with Columbus North’s Claire Thompson, who also received the Mildred Ball Mental Attitude Award.

Their efforts capped tremendous seasons and showed what the combination of hard work, determination and skill can achieve.

Good idea

The city will turn to a familiar face for a part of the State Road 46 overpass project, landscape architect Michael Van Valkenburgh, who designed Mill Race Park.

The Cummins Foundation provided a $28,000 grant to pay for landscaping advice. It’s not only a good idea, but saves taxpayers money. That’s appreciated.
