The Columbus East and Columbus North boys and girls track and field teams will have to wait a couple of weeks to see each other for the first time this season.
Both teams, along with Brown County and four other schools, were to compete in Saturday’s North Invitational. But that meet has been canceled because of cold temperatures expected for that day.
North was rained out of meets March 28 at Whiteland and Tuesday against Bloomington South, so that would have been the Bull Dogs’ season-opener. The Olympians opened with boys and girls losses Saturday at Bloomington South and were rained out of Tuesday’s meet at Seymour.
The East and North boys and girls will square off in their annual dual meet April 19 at East. The girls teams will compete in the Franklin Sectional on May 15, and the boys North Sectional is May 17.
The Olympians and Bull Dogs also will square off in girls tennis Monday at East. On April 16, North and East will play each other in softball at North’s home field at Southside Elementary and in Unified track at East.
The North-East baseball game is scheduled for May 4 at North’s home, Southside Elementary field. The two boys golf teams will meet May 3 at Otter Creek and May 24 at Harrison Lake.
Softball title on the line
Barring a major upset the rest of the season, the Mid-Hoosier Conference softball championship will be decided in the next two days.
Hauser and Edinburgh will play each other in a home-and-home series. Games will be at 5 p.m. today at Edinburgh and 5 p.m. Friday at Hauser.
Last year, the Jets won a pair of one-run contests early in the season on their way to capturing the MHC title. Neither team was challenged in the conference the rest of the way, but the Lancers gained revenge on Hauser with a 1-0 win in last year’s regional.
The Jets are off to a 1-1 start with a 4-2 loss at Shelbyville and a 15-3, five-inning win at Brownstown Central. Edinburgh won its opener 2-0 Monday against Franklin.
Senior named North MVP
Senior Brigham Kleinhenz, who qualified for state at 170 pounds, has been named MVP of the Columbus North wrestling team.
Kleinhenz also won the team’s Bull Dog Award and was recognized for having the most pins and most takedowns and as the team captain. Junior Bradley Gutierrez won the Most Improved Award, and junior Morgan Smith won the Larry Perkinson Mental Attitude Award.
Freshman Tyler Williams was honored for having the most reversals. Ashton Clark won the Brandon Shehan Award as the team’s outstanding freshman who also displayed excellent sportsmanship and a strong work ethic.
Justin Cooper, who has been the North wrestling coach the past two years, resigned that position last week.
North sets basketball camp
The 2018 Columbus North Girls Basketball Youth Camp will be June 4 to 7 for girls entering grades 2 to 8. Sessions for grades 5 to 8 will be from 1 to 3 p.m. the first three days and extended to 1 to 4 p.m. on the last day for a guest speaker. Sessions for grades 2 to 4 will be from 3:30 to 5 p.m. the first three days and 2:45 to 5 p.m. the final day.
North coach and Indiana All-Star girls coach Pat McKee, North assistant coaches Brett White and Alan Vickrey, current players from the Bull Dogs’ program and guest coaches will work with the campers. The guest speaker will be Lori Meinerding Morris, the 1987 Indiana Miss Basketball who played at Indiana University.
The fee is $65 for grades 5 to 8 and $60 for grades 2 to 4. Participants are asked to register by May 24 so an appropriate number of camp T-shirts and other items may be distributed on the first day. Registrations after May 24 will be accepted, but a $5 late fee will be added, and a T-shirt will not be guaranteed for late registrants. Registration includes a $5 Subway gift card and two complimentary tickets to the Indiana-Kentucky All-Star basketball doubleheader June 9 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
