Project combines animals, art

Jennings County High School senior Shelby Millspaugh, a member of the National Art Honor Society and Academy of Fine Arts, will host a silent art auction and meet-and-greet with adoptable shelter animals from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the Stellar Building in downtown North Vernon.

The event fulfills Millspaugh’s requirement as an AFA member to plan and host an artful community service project while allowing her to help animals, one of Millspaugh’s biggest passions. She said that when trying to determine what to do for this project, Karen Chilman, Jennings County’s AFA sponsor, told her to pick something that she loved. Millspaugh immediately thought of her love for dogs and has been planning the event ever since.

Both cats and dogs will be present at the event, and attendees will be able to apply for adoption of these animals through Mercy Rescue. However, animals cannot be adopted the day of the event in an attempt to ensure that animals are going to a good home.

In addition, animal-inspired art pieces ranging from handmade dog bowls, paintings and even dog treats will be auctioned off, all of which are pieces that have been made and donated by NAHS members. The proceeds of this auction benefit Mercy Rescue as well as NAHS.
