A sink hole that materialized on Pearl Street between Third and Fourth streets has been repaired.
The Columbus Department of Public Works and Columbus City Utilities crews were called Friday night to the scene, where City Utilities determined that repairs would be made Saturday morning, said Bryan Burton, the city’s director of public works.
Crews said the storm sewer lateral had become damaged at some point, causing the sink hole, Burton said. Temporary repairs were made, with permanent repairs to be done as soon as possible, he said.
Sink holes commonly result from busted pipes, damaged pipes and water leaks, Burton said.
The majority of sink holes are found before the pavement or ground gives way, but sometimes — as was the case Friday — a sink hole only appears after it has collapsed, he said.
