Lollygag and Labyrinth Walk new offering for community

Vernon’s longtime Sassafras Festival this coming weekend will be followed by a first-time event in early May.

The Friends of Historic Vernon is conducting the inaugural Vernon Lollygag and Labyrinth Walk from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 5.

The walk will be more of a scavenger hunt than a physical exercise event. Participants will begin The Commons and be given a map of Vernon residences, businesses, public places and historic sites to visit. At each stop there will be an activity or a freebie such as a coupon, prize, sample, tour or demonstration. Additional events during the event will include a painted rock scavenger hunt, hammock station, live music and geocaching.

“We want to have an activity that will bring everyone together to have fun and also highlight some of the things in our community. We hope it goes over well and we will do it next year, too,” Vernon Mayor Dan Wright said.

All community members are then invited to help build a rock labyrinth at The Commons. People are asked to bring their own favorite rock to help form the labyrinth.

The event costs $20 for adults and $10 for youths to participate. All money received will be donated to the Friends of Historic Vernon Activities. Participants will receive a T-shirt for their donation, but people must register by Monday to be guaranteed a shirt.
