Columbus police arrested a local man after he was accused of attempting to enter another customer’s occupied vehicle to evade police.
Police were sent to a store in the 700 block of Whitfield Drive at 9:15 p.m. Saturday about a man acting suspiciously. The man filled a shopping cart with merchandise and later fled out an emergency exit after he saw officers approaching, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.
A short time later, the man — identified as David A. Compton, 19, of 10330 W. Georgetown Road — attempted to get into an occupied vehicle in a nearby parking lot, Harris said.
The car owner advised officers he did not know Compton and did not give him permission to enter the vehicle, Harris said. Compton was arrested on a charge of unlawful entry into a vehicle and was taken to the Bartholomew County Jail, Harris said.
He was being held without bond at the jail, jail officials said.
