Mr. Donald Joseph “Donnie” Schafer, age 65, of Madison, Indiana entered this life on May 9, 1952 in Jefferson County, Indiana. He was the loving son of the late Charles Henry and Elsie Marie Dierkes Schafer. He resided all of his life in Jefferson County and was a 1970 graduate of Shawe Memorial High School. Donnie had worked for Lohrig Construction for 20 years as a carpenter and then Force Construction where he retired after 27 years of service. He loved farming, fishing, gardening, and was an avid IU fan. Donnie belonged to the Carpenters Union 631, the Knights of Columbus, and was a member of the Prince of Peace Catholic Church. Donnie loved to play euchre twice a week with his friends and family. He was a devoted husband, dad and brother. Donnie died on Tuesday, May 1, 2018, at 11:02 p.m. at the Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.

Donnie will be missed by his loving wife of nearly 43 years, Jane Ann Koop Schafer of Madison, Indiana; his loving daughter, Jamie Schafer of Indianapolis, Indiana; his loving son, Patrick Schafer of Madison, Indiana; his loving brothers, Robert Schafer and his wife, Nancy of Madison, Indiana, Richard Schafer of Palmetto, Florida; his loving sister, Linda Greene of Madison, Indiana; his sisters-in-law, Mary Lou Burcham and her husband, Wayne of Vallonia, Indiana, Sara Hanner and her husband, Kevin of Brownstown, Indiana; his brother-in-law, Max Koop of Brownstown, Indiana; his uncles, John Schafer and his wife, Sharon, Robert Dierkes and his wife, Jane of Sarasota, Indiana; his aunt, Elma Schafer of Madison, Indiana; 9-nieces and 11-nephews; several cousins and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Henry Schafer died, January 8, 1996, his mother, Elsie Marie Dierkes Schafer died, August 14, 2001, and his sister, Joann Fraley died, May 8, 1994; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, William and Lorene Koop.

Funeral Mass will be conducted Monday, May 7, 2018, at 11:00 am, by Father Christopher A. Craig at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 413 East Second Street in downtown Madison, Indiana. Interment will follow in the St. Patrick Cemetery in Madison, Indiana. Friends may visit Sunday from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. and Monday from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana. The Rosary will be prayed on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre.
