A local program that assists the homeless is hosting a Donate to Skate fundraiser from 6 p.m. Saturday to noon Sunday.
Columbus Homeless Independence and Resiliency Program, commonly called CHIRP, is holding the event at Hamilton Community Center and Ice Arena, 2501 Lincoln Park Drive.
Organizers are encouraging those planning to attend to recruit sponsors willing to donate to the cause of helping the local homeless. Organizers are hoping each attendee can raise or donate a minimum of $50. Prizes will be awarded for the biggest fundraisers.
CHIRP leaders say they knew of about 30 people this past winter living outdoors in Bartholomew County. Four of them now have apartments, said Linda Schadenfroh, CHIRP founder and executive director.
“Some had jobs. But when it got so very cold, they lost their jobs or quit due to no transportation,” Schadenfroh said.
CHIRP supplied items such as sleeping bags, heaters, cook stoves and food. Tents also were supplied, but an ordinance prohibits people living in tents within city limits, even if it is on private property.
For the weekend event, sixth graders and younger attendees need to be accompanied by an adult. Anyone younger than 18 years old cannot leave the building without a parent’s permission. Any attendee leaving the building cannot return.
For free-will donations, make checks out to Chirp, Inc. and mail to Chirp, P.O. Box 1835, Columbus, Indiana 47202-1835.
