Local man arrested after high speed chase

Staff Reports

A local man was arrested after he was accused of leading Columbus police officers on a high-speed chase.

Officer Matt Prendergast stopped a vehicle on Jonathan Moore Pike near the Interstate 65 interchange at 10:50 p.m. Tuesday for failing to signal a lane change, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman. The driver — William R. Bowen, 67, of 4851 Pine Ridge Drive — claimed to be having a medical emergency, and instead refused an ambulance and sped away.

Prendergast followed Bowen at a high rate of speed as Bowen drove east on Jonathan Moore Pike before turning south on Jonesville Road, Harris said. Bowen later lost control of his vehicle near Jonesville Road and County Road 550S, where his vehicle went down an embankment and into a field, Harris said.

Bowen was arrested on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, intimidation and reckless driving, police said. He was released from the Bartholomew County Jail on the county’s pre-trial diversion program that allows accused offenders to be released prior to their court appearances.
