Take a shine to library’s summer activities

Summer is almost here.

At the Bartholomew County Public Library, summer means it is time for our annual Summer Reading Challenge to begin. This year’s theme is “Libraries Rock!” All summer long, we will offer a variety of events involving music, musicals and, of course, rocks.

The Summer Reading Challenge begins Monday and runs through July 27. Everyone from babies to adults can participate, and you can choose any or all of the following options:

Reading log: If you just love to read or want to challenge yourself to read more, this may be a good choice for you. To finish a reading log you will either read five books or read for 500 minutes, whichever you prefer.

BINGO card: If you like reading, listening to music, fun activities or watching musicals, the BINGO card is for you. Complete challenges on your card to cover four squares in a row (any direction or four corners). Examples of the challenges include: listen to five songs from the year your parent was born; read outside for an hour; checkout a musical from the library; have a dance party with friends or family.

Learn something new: If you’ve been wanting to learn to knit, fix a problem with your car, try a new recipe, explore new career options or find a new craft idea, give this challenge card a try. All you have to do is check out a book at any of our locations, learn how to do something new (can be anything you want) and then either draw or write about what you learned in the blank space provided.

You can complete as many Summer Reading Challenge cards as you like through July 27. Bring in your completed cards and exchange them for a prize and raffle ticket for one of our many grand prizes. Grand prize options include:

One-night stay at the Story Inn (18 and older only)

$100 Target gift card

Children’s bicycle

Ukulele

Several other options

We will kick off our summer events with our Summer Celebration Party from 5:30 to 7 p.m. June 4 at the main library at 536 Fifth St. in Columbus, and from 5:30 to 7 p.m. June 5 at the Hope Branch Library on the historic Hope Town Square. Both events will include outdoor inflatables, face painting, games and many other activities.

Many of our events will also have door prizes, such as tickets for Kings Island, Reds games, gift certificates and more. To discover when and where our exciting lineup of events are happening, check out our calendar by going to mybcpl.org and click on the “events” tab, pick up a program guide at the library, or follow us on Facebook.
