COLUMBUS
Herschel E. O’Shaughnessey, 98, of Columbus, died May 31, 2018.
Herschel was born April 1, 1920 in Fort Wayne, to Irving A. and Lola M. (Baker) O’Shaughnessey.
He graduated from high school in Fort Wayne, and then received his undergraduate degree from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio.
Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific during World War II.
Upon his return to the U.S. he received his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from Indiana University School of Law.
Mr. O’Shaughnessey began his career working in the law department of Standard Oil of Indiana.
In 1958 he moved to Columbus, and joined Union Starch. In 1965 Herschel joined Cummins and became a vice president in marketing and sales.
Mr. O’Shaughnessey’s community service included leading the Bartholomew County United Way campaign for several years.
He and his wife, Mary, were members of First Presbyterian Church for 61 years and were both ordained elders and Sunday school teachers.
Herschel was a lifetime member of the Indiana University Alumni Association, a member of the Hoosier Hundred, Well House Society, the Varsity Club, and the Law School Alumni Association. He had been president of the Phi Delta Phi legal honorary society, and a contributing editor to the law school journal.
He was also a member of the Calvin Prather Masonic Lodge of Indianapolis, the Scottish Rite Cathedral of Indianapolis, and the Murat Shrine Temple of Indianapolis.
In May 1943, he married Mary (Crocker) O’Shaughnessey. She preceded him in death in 2009.
Also preceding him were his parents and three sisters.
Survivors include his loving children, Michael O’Shaughnessey of Carmel, Patricia (Philip) Adler of Terre Haute and Nancy (John) Wagner of Kirkwood, Missouri. Also surviving are many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 9, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church of Columbus with the Rev. Dr. Felipe Martinez and Zack Ellison officiating. A reception and time of gathering will follow the service at the church.
