Local golfers compete in Indiana Amateur Championship

Eight local golfers are competing in the Indiana Amateur Championship at Otter Creek that started on Monday.

Columbus North graduates Tanner Bennett and Coleman Glick are leading all area golfers after the first day by posting a 1-over-par 73. They both are currently tied for 15th place overall. Sean Rowen from Greenwood is leading the way with a 4-under 68. Glick said carding a 73 is an acceptable first-round score.

“One-over-(par) doesn’t lose the tournament by any means,” Glick said. “You can’t win it in the first day, but you could lose it. It could have been worse, it could have been better.”

Michael VanDeventer golfed a 4-over 76 to end the first day in 48th place. Bryce Turner carded a 5-over 77 for 60th place. Spencer Fairbanks finished with a 7-over 79 for 78th, and Eric Grider posted a 9-over 81 for 95th place.

Aubrey Seaman from Brown County is sitting in 126th place after carding a 13-over 85. Will Mayhew is in 135th place with a 17-over 89. VanDeventer said the heat made it a little tougher to golf and he struggled a bit for the first day, he said.

“I didn’t hit it very well today,” VanDeventer said. “I kind of struggled in all areas, but I was able to scrap it around thankfully. I hit a couple shots close and got a couple birdies. I’ll definitely spend the afternoon practice trying to tighten things up a little bit and hopefully be better tomorrow.

The second round will start today with the first group teeing off at 8 a.m. and the final group at 2:48 p.m.
