Turner with best score of the second round

Columbus North graduate Bryce Turner jumped up the leader board after carding a 4-under-par 68 in the second round of the Indiana Amateur Championship on Tuesday.

The St. Francis sophomore birdied five holes with one bogey on his way to posting the best score of the second round at Otter Creek. He is 1-over 145 for the two rounds, which is good enough for a  15th-place tie after ending the first round in 60th. He is now eight shots behind front runner Sean Rowen from Greenwood who is 7-under 137.

Turner had no problem making the cut to advance to the final two rounds, but he’s looking to put himself in a position to win it all, he said.

“I’d like to keep going low to see how close I can get to winning this thing in the next couple rounds,” Turner said. “I wish I can just do what I did today, tomorrow. I’m sure it won’t be that easy, but I just hit a bunch of greens and the putter felt really good.”

The cut off to advance to the final two rounds was 8-over 152 and there were two other local competitors who made it through. Tanner Bennett and Michael VanDeventer are tied in 33rd with a 4-over 148. VanDeventer had to make up a little ground on Bennett by golfing an even-par 72 and Bennett carded a 3-over 75.

“It was little worse than yesterday, but I held it together,” Bennett said. “I hit a couple bad iron shots, left them them in some tough spots but 75 is never bad for me. I’m enjoying getting back into competitive golf, it’s fun.”

The seven other local golfers who did not make the cut were Coleman Glick who shot an 81 to end with a 10-over 154 for both days. Spencer Fairbanks (159), Parker VanNess (160), Eric Grider (161) and Kody Reynolds (162) all shot 80s in the second round. Aubrey Seaman carded an 81 to finished with 166 strokes and Will Mayhew had a 177 stroke total after posting an 88 in the second round.
