Tough day/Local golfers look to have solid final round

Birdie shots were hard to come by on Wednesday for the three local golfers still competing in the Indiana Amateur Championship at Otter Creek.

The third round featured just two birdies between the three competitors, having both coming from Michael VanDeventer on the third and 14th holes. VanDeventer also bogeyed five holes to end the day with a 3-over-par 75. He’s tied for 31st with 223 strokes heading into today’s final round. Cole Bradley of West Lafayette is out in front with a 10-under 206.

“I struggled a little bit,” VanDeventer said. “Still not striking it very well, and  then when the putters kind of cold it’s hard to score. But I’m doing an OK job of hanging in there and not making big numbers. Hopefully we can kind of turn things around (today) and see some puts fall in to post a good number.”

Bryce Turner carded the best second-round score of the tournament with a 4-under 68 on Tuesday, and came into the third round thinking he might be able to shoot himself into contention for winning it all. Unfortunately for Turner, his 75 in the third round pushed him down ten spots He is tied for 25th with a 4-over 220 total score.

Tanner Bennett is tied for 51st place after golfing 8-over 80 today. He is 12-over 228 after three rounds.

“Those guys go a couple under par everyday,” Turner said of the leaders. “That’s kind of hard to keep up with after a first round of 77, but hopefully I can move up the leader board a little bit (today).”

Today’s tee times are at 8 a.m. for VanDeventer, 8:09 a.m. for Turner and 8:45 a.m. for Bennett.
