Eugene Hillenburg, age 90, of Scipio, passed away on Thursday, July 5, 2018, at his residence, surrounded by his family.
Mr. Hillenburg attended Kurtz Church of the Nazarene. He served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Sarsfield. He worked at Cosco as a tool and die maker. Eugene was also involved in the Carpenters Union as well as the Teamsters Union.
Born on June 26, 1928, at his home in Kurtz, he was the son of James M. and Nellie Mae (Grubb) Hillenburg, both of whom preceded him in death. On April 1, 1950, at Kurtz Church of the Nazarene, he married Carolyn Osborne, and she preceded him in death on February 12, 1999.
Survivors include one son: Tim (Katrina) Hillenburg of Seymour; one daughter: Anita Marlene (Harvey) Burton of Moncks Corner, South Carolina; five grandchildren: Larry Joe Lyons Jr., Carol Broadway, Bill Burton, Trent Hillenburg, and Erika Berry; seven great-grandchildren: Tyler Silence, Jacob Silence, Sophie Broadway, Mattie Broadway, Miles Berry, Harper Berry, and Maximus Hillenburg.
Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by all of his brothers and sisters — four brothers: James Hillenburg, Rufus Hillenburg, Lenza (Amos) Hillenburg, and Ancil (Andy) Hillenburg; five sisters: Myrtle Fish, Mary Hanner, Margie Davis, Martha Murphy, and Marilyn Roberts.
Funeral services for Eugene Hillenburg will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at Garland Brook Cemetery, Columbus, with Pastor Floyd Fisher officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10, 2018, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., Brownstown.
Interment will be at Garland Brook Cemetery, Columbus.
Military honors will be presented by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925, American Legion Post 89, Disabled American Veterans 47 and Vietnam Vets 7.
Memorials may be given to Jackson County Humane Society and Red Sky Rescue.
