As health insurance costs rise, more people struggle to pay the premiums. That’s especially true for those with low incomes.
For some, they reach the point of having to go without health care because premiums are simply too expensive for their budgets. When having to choose among rent, food, utilities and health insurance, some people are forced to risk going without health insurance.
That’s a terrible situation to be in, and one that no one would wish on another.
Fortunately, a relatively new health insurance program is having success with income-eligible residents in Bartholomew County.
Premium Link is a program through the United Way of Bartholomew County that helps residents who qualify pay their premiums to avoid losing coverage.
Participants must fall within 200 percent of federal poverty standards to be eligible.
The program was created because of a high number of clients having difficulty paying for medical coverage, especially the elderly living on fixed incomes.
It targets individuals most in need and helps maintain everyday aspects of their health, such as checkups and medication refills.
Premium Link makes locally funded grants to residents who qualify by subsidizing premium payments for Marketplace Silver customers and HIP 2.0 Power account customers.
The program has been a lifesaver for some participants. Since the program launched in 2016, 120 people have been served.
That’s 120 people who now don’t have to choose between paying for health insurance or other critical needs, and can receive the checkups and medications they need.
The early results indicate the program is beneficial and having a positive impact on people’s lives. Continuing the program will benefit many more.
