Road repair in city underway

Motorists in Columbus can expect to experience delays as road construction begins under the first phase of the city’s overlay program.

Milestone Contractors started work Friday on First Street from Franklin to Lafayette streets, in addition to improvements on Fifth Street from Lafayette to Pearl streets and Seventh Street from Franklin to Lafayette streets.

The work is to repair places where the pavement has deteriorated, said Dave Hayward, executive director of public works/city engineer. It involves removing existing pavement and putting in new pavement on the road, Hayward said.

Columbus approved a contract for $2.1 million with Milestone for the first phase of its street overlay program that will bring improvements to more than 35 different streets in the city. Streets being upgraded were identified through the city’s pavement-management system, used to rank streets based on their overall condition, Hayward said.

“We don’t want to get any streets that involve reconstruction,” he said.

Once the patching work is completed, streets are expected to be in good condition for the next 20 to 25 years depending on factors such as soil conditions, drainage and whether the area has mild or harsh winters.

Patching work is scheduled to begin Monday on Forrest Drive from Maple to 27th streets, in addition to work on Illinois Street from Brooks Street to Gladstone Avenue. That work is expected to continue through Wednesday, according to the city.

Contractors will also begin replacing concrete cross gutters on Flintwood Drive at the intersections of Yellowwood Drive, Magnolia Street, 29th Street and Miami Drive starting Monday.

Construction will done at one intersection at a time, while drains will be installed at those same locations about a week later, according to the city.

Drivers should anticipate some delays as road repairs continue, but most streets receiving improvements through the overlay program involve flaggers, Hayward said. The city is also working to get work targeted near schools completed before the Aug. 8 start of classes.

Work on the first phase of the overlay program should be finished by Sept. 30, Hayward said.
