COLUMBUS

On July 23, 2018, Robert Martin Evans, 85, husband, father and grandfather, died at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana after a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia. He spent 58 years living in Columbus, however he started his life in Watseka, Illinois as the oldest son of Robert Thomas Evans and Ellen Martin. He grew up in Arlington Heights, Illinois where he attended Arlington Heights High School and was an accomplished three sport athlete. He attended Indiana University where he received a B.S. and Masters in Business. He was President of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and excelled in multiple intermural sports as well as rode in the University’s Little 500.

After graduation, Bob served in the U.S. Air Force for 3 years as a rated officer in the Strategic Air Command. He began working for Cummins Engine Company in 1959 and held management positions until her retired in 1985. He then worked for a management consulting and executive recruiting firm until 1997.

Bob was an enthusiastic athlete with several interests including running, cycling, golf and tennis. He competed in numerous team sports within the Columbus community over the course of his adult life. He was a timekeeper and lap counter for the Indianapolis 500 for several years. He had numerous honors and memberships including the AF ROTC Chicago Tribune Gold Medal, Columbus Tennis Association President, past member of First United Methodist Church where he served as Foundation President and member of HLCC.

His role as loving husband, father and “G-pa” to his grandchildren brought him great pride and happiness. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Carol; daughters Kathy Evans of Cincinnati and Sarah Kahn of San Francisco; son, John Evans (Melanie) of Balve, Germany; grandsons Wesley and Jack McKeown; granddaughters Stella and Sadie Kahn, Melissa Evans and a brother, Dennis Evans (Ruth) of Scotsdale, Arizona.

There will be a celebration of Bob’s life at the Evans home on Saturday, August 4.
