Help hungry children

Children in some parts of the world struggle to have enough food to be properly nourished each day. That’s a tragedy.

Fortunately, there are opportunities to help through meal-packing events for Minnesota-based Christian ministry Feed My Starving Children. Rice-based meal packs are sent to countries where food is not plentiful, in order to ensure children of that country have food to eat to help them grow and thrive. Sandy Hook Church is doing meal packing today and Sunday, and Asbury United Methodist Church is packing meals Sept. 7 and 8.

This is a great opportunity to help others. Go to sandyhook.org or Sandy Hook’s Facebook page, and asburycolumbus.org and Asbury’s Facebook page for details about volunteering.

Worthwhile idea

The need for personal safety in public buildings is greater than ever before. For that reason, we like the idea of creating holding areas at the Bartholomew County Courthouse.

Holding areas are intended to ensure that witnesses and defendants are not in close proximity. That’s sensible, because it reduces the opportunity for interaction that could lead to physical or verbal attacks.

One proposed holding area would protect children in the Juvenile Court, and the other one would be used for Circuit and Superior I. Creating holding areas would enhance safety in the courthouse. The project should move forward.

School officer warranted

The Flat Rock-Hawcreek School Corp., with assistance from Bartholomew County Sheriff Matt Myers, is seeking a full-time school resource officer to help provide protection to its schools, which combined have about 900 students from elementary though high school.

Myers is proposing funding in his 2019 budget for two school resource officers, one to serve FRHC and the other Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. Currently, FRHC has been using the help of a Hope Police reserve officer, which has been well received. However, that person has not graduated from the state law enforcement training academy or received specialized training for school security.

In this day and age of increased threats and violence at schools, providing strong protection for students is necessary for communities. A full-time resource officer at the FRHC schools would be an important step.
