North finishes third
INDIANAPOLIS — Columbus North took on some of the state’s best girls golf teams Saturday in the Roncalli Invitational at Smock Golf Course.
Top-ranked Zionsville won with a 300, followed by No. 3 Carmel a 318 and the No. 6 Bull Dogs at 320. No. 7 Westfield was fourth with a 324.
Nathaly Munnicha finished second individually with a 73 to lead North. Alex Munnicha carded a 77, Annie Anderson added a 79, Yestika Nischol shot 91 and Ella Wilks had a 92.
Olympians take 10th
CONNERSVILLE — Columbus East played without top golfer Lauren Steinwedel because of illness and finished 10th with a 436 in the Connersville Invitational.
Ellie Buntin led the Olympians with a 101 at Willowbrook Country Club. Katie Brunn added a 102, Peyton Meier shot 111 and Martinez had a 122.
Eagles finish fourth
JASPER — Brown County finished fourth with a 441 in the Jasper Invitational. Jasper won with a 384 at Buffalo Trace.
Ashley Masteller finished fourth individually with a 90 to lead the Eagles. Ainslie Wintin and Allison Stogsdill each shot 114, Taylor Poling added a 123 and Abby Padgett had a 129.
BOYS TENNIS
Bull Dogs take third
JEFFERSONVILLE — Columbus North opened its season with a third-place finish in the Jeffersonville Invitatational. Delta won with 36 points to 34 for Jasper and 29 for the Bull Dogs.
North’s Bhavey Jain went 2-1 to finish second in the No. 2 singles bracket. Joey Zhao at No. 3 singles and Adam Saad and Nathan Lin at No. 1 doubles each went 2-1 and place third. Kevin Lin at No. 1 singles and Matthew Liu and Eamon Ma at No. 2 doubles each went 2-1 to finish fourth.
Because one of the eight schools dropped out of the tournament, the eighth spot in the brackets were filled by extra players from the seven remaining schools. The Bull Dogs’ Atharva Kute and Will King went 2-1 at No. 1 doubles.
Knights topple Eagles
BRAZIL — Brown County won the No. 1 singles match, but Northview took the other four to claim a 4-1 victory.
Aaron McCann beat Owen Tipton 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles for the lone victory for the Eagles (2-1). Chase Watson fell to Brevin Cooper 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, and Josh Miller lost to Tyler Hess 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.
Brown County’s Specer Blee and Nolan Patterson fell to Caleb Swearingen and Benjamin Goshen 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. John Oliver and Reid Davis lost to Chase Nickles and JD Buell 6-7 (7), 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.
VOLLEYBALL
Crusaders win twice
Columbus Christian picked up a pair of wins against IHSAA schools in less than 16 hours, beating South Central 23-25, 25-20, 25-12, 27-25 on Friday night and South Decatur 25-20, 25-23, 25-21 on Saturday morning.
Mayah Schundelmier recorded four kills and four digs, and Madison Henderson had six digs and six aces for the Crusaders against South Central. Hannah Stair tallied eight assists, and Kayla Jones served seven aces
Lauren Hunnicutt totaled six kills, four blocks, five digs and six aces; while Henderson had five kills, seven digs and three aces and Stair notched 21 assists, three digs and five aces for Columbus Christian (3-0) against South Decatur. Schundelmier pounded seven kills and two blocks, Jones had seven digs and three aces and Ellie Ridder added three blocks.
For the Cougars (1-2), Madison Owens pounded six kills, Hannah Ballard recorded seven assists, Whitnye Burton tallied 11 digs and Brook Somers served seven aces. Owens, Somers, Lana Bell and Sam Goodfellow all had one block.
Jets win three of four
HENRYVILLE — Hauser went 3-1 to finish second in the Henryville Invitational. The Jets beat North Harrison 25-17, 25-15 and Edinburgh 25-15, 25-12, before falling to Paoli 25-23, 25-19 and beating Henryville 25-15 25-27, 15-7.
Hannah Johnson pounded a combined 30 kills, Aunaka Wasil recorded 62 assists, Olivia Wright had five blocks, Melanie Taylor notched 22 digs and Kylie Lock served 15 aces to lead the Jets (5-1).
Lock also tallied 15 kills, one block and 15 digs; Johnson added three blocks and seven aces and Shelby Fugate contributed 11 kills and 20 digs and six aces. Wasil had one block, 13 digs and eight aces, Marnie Schwarzkopf pounded nine kills and two blocks, Wright added seven kills and Taylor notched two assists and seven aces.
Following their loss to Hauser, the Lancers (0-6) fell to North Harrison, 25-15, 25-16; Henryville 25-13, 25-7 and Paoli 25-14, 25-18.
Eagles prevail in four
ELLETTSVILLE — Brown County rallied from a first set setback to claim a 22-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-16 Western Indiana Conference win at Edgewood.
Baelyn Koester led the Eagles (2-0, 1-0) with 24 digs and six aces. Mekenzie Dunnuck pounded 15 kills, Abigail Hollander recorded 24 assists and Shea Keller had three blocks.
Also for Brown County, Keller and Chloe Lee each pounded 10 kills. Maggie Redmond added 20 assists, and Dunnuck served five aces.
CROSS-COUNTRY
East girls take eighth
INDIANAPOLIS — Columbus East finished eighth in the Zionsville Invitational girls junior/senior race with 197 points and 10th in the boys junior/senior race with 261 points. West Lafayette’s girls won with 44, and Fishers’ boys won with 28.
Olivia Linnemann led the Olympian girls with a 22nd-place finish in 17 minutes, 52.53 seconds for 4,000 meters (2.5 miles). Amanda Pottorff took 32nd in 18:09.93, while Leonie Strickler was 46th (20:36.38), Maddy Ping 48th (21:21.33) and Michaela Greathouse 49th (21:25.13).
Garrett McGaha finished 40th in 15:06.86 to lead the East boys. Matthew Novreske took 47th in 15:35.35, while Nick Walter was 50th (15:45.88), Ryan Sadtler 58th (16:10.67) and Owen Rupp 66th (16:56.46).
The Olympians finished sixth in the girls freshman/sophomore race with 163 points and 10th in the boys freshman/sophomore race with 252 points. Zionsville’s girls won with 40, and Noblesville’s boys won with 36.
Jordan Spurgeon led the East girls with a 25th-place finish in 17:34.88. Elizabeth Stevens took 28th in 18:00.54, while Olivia Shoaf was 35th (18:36.08), Kaylin DeHart 46th (18:48.66) and Kerigan Greathouse 39th (19:15.55).
Tyler Hertle finished 37th in 15:28.42 to lead the Olympian boys. Nathan Wettschurack took 49th in 16:16.23, while Casey Bartholomew was 51st (16:38.93), Mason Curry 56th (16:54.91) and Cameron Stevens 59th (17:09.95).
Jennings boys win invite
MADISON — Jennings County’s boys won their second invitational in a row to begin the season. The Panthers scored 25 points to 42 for runner-up New Albany to claim the Madison Invitational.
Jennings’ Alex Hendrix won the 5,000-meter (2.5-mile) race in 17:20. Carter Leak finished second in 17:30, while Lane Elsner was fourth in 17:54, Jason Gasper 10th (18:30) and Gavin Hendrix 11th (18:31).
BOYS SOCCER
Olympians drop pair
GREENWOOD — Columbus East dropped two close games in the Center Grove Tournament, falling to both Elkhart Memorial 1-0 and Class 3A No. 12 Center Grove by 1-0 scores.
Zach Roberts recorded three saves for the Olympians (1-2) against Elkhart Memorial and four saves against Center Grove.
Spartans edge Jets
HOPE — Southwestern (Shelby) converted a penalty kick with less than 10 minutes remaining to hand Hauser a 4-3 Mid-Hoosier Conference loss in its season opener.
Alec Lopez, Sam Johnson and Will Trotter scored goals for the Jets. Justin Stafford had an assist.
The Spartans outshot Hauser 13-8. Caleb Walker posted nine saves in relief of Cameron Lawson, who had two saves before leaving the game with a concussion.
Columbus Christian falls
MARION — Columbus Christian couldn’t find the net in a 10-0 loss at Kings Academy.
Kings outshot the Crusasders (0-2) 24-5. Garrett Spurgeon recorded 12 saves.
Corydon blanks Jennings
NORTH VERNON — Jennings County outshot Corydon Central 11-8, but dropped a 2-0 season-opening decision.
Corydon put eight shots on goal to four for Jennings. Dreagen Ison posted eight saves.

Panthers pound Lions
SALEM — Naomi Beal scored a pair of goals to lead Jennings County to a 7-1 win at Salem.
Lauren Green, Emily Montgomery, Katie Pappenheim, Sonya Miller and Zoey Ison all added one goal for the Panthers (2-0). Baylee Byford recorded two assists, while Green, Katie Pappenheim, Beal, Delany Burkman and Kayla Pappenheim all had one.
Jennings outshot the Lions 27-1. Salem’s goal came on a penalty kick.

Chargers clip Cougars
GREENSBURG — South Decatur opened its season with a 49-13 loss to rival North Decatur.
Both of the Cougars’ scores came in the second half. Wyatt Gatewood scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak, and Jacobi Shook went in on a 3-yard dive.
“I thought we played better in the second half,” South Decatur coach Garry Sauley said. “The third quarter, they still had their starting defense in, and we were able to move the ball. We just have to do it for four quarters.”
Batesville blanks Panthers
BATESVILLE — Jennings County had a rough opener Friday in a 40-0 loss at Batesville.
The Panthers will travel to Brown County on Friday.
Tindley tops Trinity
SEYMOUR — Trinity Lutheran fell behind Tindley 27-0 in Friday’s season opener and came away with a 27-14 loss.
Quarterback Tyler Goecker ran six yards for the Cougars’ first touchdown. Their second score came on a busted play when, after having the ball snapped over his head, Goecker picked it up, scrambled to his left and found Jack Marksberry for a 36-yard touchdown. Goecker then hit Lawson Woods for the 2-point conversion.
“I’m loaded with freshmen and sophomores, so a lot of them, seven or eight, this was their first varsity game,” Trinity coach Mike Wilson said. “They did an outstanding job. I’m really proud of them. It was a good team effort, but the scoreboard doesn’t reflect what we want. We’ve just got to keep working and getting better every week.”
