I enjoyed reading the article about the Republican ice cream social in The Republic on Aug. 13. There were several quotes that caught my attention.
I’ll start with Greg Pence saying that Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi have become totally dysfunctional. I hope he realizes that it’s the Republican Party that holds the power at this time. It seems it’s the Republican Party that is totally dysfunctional. After running on “Repeal and Replace” the Affordable Care Act, they finally realized that the ACA is quite popular, even with their own voters. It is Nancy Pelosi, former House Speaker and current minority leader, who should get credit for passing the ACA.
Let’s take a look at the Republican Speakers of late.
Paul Ryan is the fiscal conservative who is responsible for adding trillions to the deficit in order to give a tax cut to the wealthy. John Boehner will be remembered as the Speaker who decided not to run for re-election. One reason is that his predecessor, Dennis Hastert, passed the “Hastert Rule” making it more difficult to govern. I’m sure everyone remembers why Dennis Hastert couldn’t run for re-election. Then there was Newt Gingrich. He is the one who shut down the government trying to get President Clinton to cut Medicare. I’ll take Nancy Pelosi over these men any day.
According to The Republic, Pence also said we have to keep the socialists out of Congress. This came from the guy who was president of Kiel Bros. when it went bankrupt and left the state with untold millions of dollars in clean-up costs.
When asked about the statements of Tom Linebarger concerning the possible loss of jobs in the area due to the steel and aluminum tariffs he said he was concerned, “But my glass is half full. I have a lot of confidence that the administration is laser-focused on helping U.S. manufacturing and farmers.” He couldn’t answer if he would support federal assistance to manufacturers since they haven’t been negatively impacted yet. Farmers have been promised $12 billion dollars in aid due to the negative impact of corn and soybean tariffs. Many people are saying this is the textbook definition of socialism.
I find it interesting that he has to think about debating his opponent Jeannine Lee Lake. If he is so sure of the good being done by the Trump/Pence administration, I would think he would welcome the opportunity to espouse his views.
As Greg Pence said, his glass is half full. But he only cares about his glass. This election I will be voting for candidates who believe that our government should work for all of us.
