Weather plays havoc with Par 3 tournament

The first round of the inaugural Par 3 City Golf Tournament was cut short by the rainy weather on Saturday.

What was supposed to be an 18-hole first round is being reduced to nine holes. Part of the field managed to get through nine holes before being postponed.

Those who didn’t get through nine holes will finish where they left of at noon today at Par 3 Golf Course, and the 18-hole second round will start at 1 p.m. This reduces the two-round tournament to 27 holes instead of 36. All 17 golfers started the first round on Hole No. 1.

Tournament director Keith VanDeventer, the pro at Par 3 and Greenbelt golf courses, didn’t want to keep participants waiting for too much longer knowing the rain wasn’t going to stop anytime soon, and some golfers had other afternoon commitments.

VanDeventer also wanted to set today’s tee time late enough for golfers who are attending church this morning. Outside of the poor weather, he feels that the tournament’s first year has been going pretty smoothly.

“It’s something we’re trying to start up,” he said. “Numbers aren’t where we want them to be, but hopefully as we continue to do this our numbers will grow, and the tournament will become a nice event for people.”
