Martha E. Eckelman, 89, passed away on Monday morning, August 27, 2018 at Westminster Village.

She was born on January 20, 1929 in Columbus.

She graduated from Columbus High School in 1948 and entered Indiana State University that fall.

In June, 1951, she married Glen O. Eckelman, also from Columbus.

Martha graduated from Indiana State University in 1952 with a bachelor’s degree in education and returned to Columbus where she was employed by the Columbus School District for two years as an elementary school teacher.

In 1954, she moved to Muncie and was a teacher at Muncie community schools for 36 1/2 years at Anthony and Storer elementary schools.

She received her master’s degree in education from Ball State University.

She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Gamma Phi Beta social sorority, NEA, ISTA and MTA during and after her teaching career.

Surviving are two sons, Mark A. Eckelman (Julie) of Muncie and Eric L. Eckelman (Lisa) of Yorktown, Virginia; five grandchildren, Melissa Pevic (Matt) of Redondo Beach, California, Marlie Arnold (Chris) of Atlanta, Georgia, Dustin R. Eckelman (Carissa) of Bridgewater, Virginia, Sara Eckelman and Jonathan Eckelman, both of Yorktown, Virginia; two great-grandsons, Jacob Eckelman and Lucas Arnold; and her brother-in-law, Carl Eckelman (Sally) of West Lafayette.

She was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. George Knight; her husband of over 56 years, Glen O. Eckelman on August 28, 2007; one daughter, Jane Austin; and a granddaughter, Erin Eckelman.

Memorial Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, August 31, 2018 at Grace Lutheran Church, 610 N. Reserve Street, Muncie, with Pastor Daniel Mackey officiating. Burial will follow in Elm Ridge Cemetery.

Family and friends may call at Grace Lutheran Church, 610 N. Reserve St., Muncie, from 1 until 2 p.m. on Friday, August 31, 2018.
