One element of the Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Annual Labor Day Weekend Concert continually amazes me, beyond the obvious great cause: How a classic rock event can attract all ages, and often show an audience how an act from yesterday still can be vibrant and relevant today. Singer and guitarist Randy Bachman, formerly of The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive, mentioned in a recent Republic interview that he’s still playing festivals before crowds as large as 30,000 people — and sold-out dates at some smaller venues. And at 74, he’s hardly slowing his musical pace. He is the headliner for Saturday’s free hospice fundraiser at 6:30 p.m. at Mill Race Park on Fifth St. in downtown Columbus. I have been impressed with Jennifer Riley’s artwork since she showed her metal-sheeting exhibit “Big Bright Steel” locally four years ago. Now, she and Steven Baker, both Indiana University faculty members, will present their work in “Floor to Wall” opening at 6 p.m. Sept. 7 and running through Oct. 21 at the gallery for the Indiana University J. Irwin Miller Architecture Program, at 333 Second St. (the former Republic Building) in downtown Columbus. The gallery will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays. So with a substantially Scottish surname such as Blair, do you really think I would skip recommending Celtic music and more at the Columbus Scottish Festival? It’s Sept. 8-9 at the Bartholomew County Fairgrounds, 750 W. County Road 200S, near Garden City. The event includes food, athletics courtesy of the Highland Games, Highland dancing and plenty more. Single-day tickets are $5 to $15, with children 4 and younger admitted free. Information: scottishfestival.org.
