Getting Familiar / North tops East in first of three meetings this week

The Columbus North and Columbus East girls golfers found out Tuesday that not only were they playing each other later that day at Otter Creek, they’d see each other again today in a tri match at Greensburg.

With the sectional set for Saturday at Greensburg, the Bull Dogs and Olympians were facing each other for the first of three times this week. Round 1 went to fifth-ranked North, which posted a 166-190 victory.

Both teams were coming off their respective conference tournaments on Monday. The Bull Dogs won the Conference Indiana title with a 312 at Timbergate, while East finished fourth with a 387 in the Hoosier Hills Conference at Shadowood.

“It wasn’t as good as (Monday), but I think this is a lot harder golf course,” North coach Scott Seavers said of Otter Creek. “I don’t think we played our best, but we’ll learn from it, and we’ll take that experience and move on.”

Nathaly Munnicha led the Bull Dogs with a 1-over-par 37 on Otter Creek’s East Nine to win medalist honors. Munnicha bounced back from a double-bogey on her first hole, No. 3, and a bogey on No. 4 to play 2-under over the final seven holes.

Munnicha chipped in from just off the green for birdie on No. 9. She finished with a birdie on No. 2.

“I did a lot better than (Monday), but still a rough start — a really rough start,” Munnicha said.

Alex Munnicha and Ella Wilks each shot 41 for North, while Yestika Nischol added a 46. Annie Anderson, who won medalist honors with a 76 in the Conference Indiana tourney, had a 47 on Tuesday.

Lauren Steinwedel led the Olympians with a 43. Ellie Buntin, Harley Gant and Peyton Meier all shot 49, and Katie Brunn had a 51

“I’m pleased,” East coach Troy Buntin said. “This golf course is hard today. It’s wet, and you’re not getting any roll, so it’s longer.”

The Bull Dogs were scheduled to play today at Greensburg, and East was scheduled to play there on Thursday. Since Greensburg has to make up its Eastern Indiana Conference tournament on Thursday, it will host both North and East today at Greensburg Country Club.
