Ruth M. Hyden departed peacefully in her sleep on the morning of September 12 after a short illness at Otterbein Senior Life Center in Franklin.

Ruth M. Hyden was born in Clifford (Hope Township) to the parents of Clurie E. Murray and Vella C. Proffitt of Tompkinsville, Kentucky. She was the sixth of 12 siblings born in Tennessee, Kentucky and Indiana.

She resided in downtown Columbus for over 70 years, most known for her 30-plus years charming customers and staff from behind the counter of Dairy Queen, initially at the Third Street location, and largely on 25th Street.

Ruth brought a memorable sass and devotion to her work and adoring patrons gravitated to her cheerful banter and tasty treats.

She also worked at Hamilton Cosco Inc.’s cafeteria, Lucas Bros. Sandwich Shop, and selling Watkins products.

She is survived by her children, Roy (Linda Webster) Hyden, Mike Hyden, Penny Merideth, Judy (Philip) Dimpelfeld, Linda Lou (David) Burmeister and Peggy (John) Seale; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; five siblings; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and seven siblings.

The funeral will be conducted at noon Monday, September 17 at Barkes, Weaver, & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Pastor Patrick Galligar officiating.

Family and friends may call from 10 a.m. to the time of service on Monday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Garland Brook Cemetery. Following will be a luncheon at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association.
