Paul R. Milliman, 84, of Columbus, passed away at 8:05 p.m. Saturday, September 22, 2018 at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.

Paul was born in Des Moines, Iowa, the fourth son of Harry Jay Milliman Sr. and Madeleine Lucienne Thieulin.

His father’s pipe organ business was a family affair for the Milliman boys, and all four sons participated. The family moved to Urbandale, a town on the west side of Des Moines.

While attending Urbandale High School, Paul played left halfback on the six-man football team.

He entered the University of Iowa in 1952 and worked his way through college using the skills and expertise he learned from his dad.

However, the draft interrupted his college years in 1954. Paul did his basic training at Ft. Chafee, Arkansas, and was assigned to duty at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. After serving in the Army, Paul returned to college, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1958.

Paul worked with his father until he decided that it was time to go out on his own.

He was hired by Aetna Casualty and Surety Company and worked for the company in Des Moines and Springfield, Illinois, also in Saginaw, Michigam.

After briefly returning to the pipe organ business after his father died, Paul returned to Aetna again, this time in Chicago where he dealt with large risk accounts. He later took a job with Chubb and Sons Insurance Company in Maryland, eventually moving to Chicago to work for American Mutual Reinsurance.

Paul joined the insurance brokerage house of Marsh and McLennan, retiring as a senior vice-president from the company in 1996.

On September 23, 1983, he married Kathryn, known as “Kate.”

Paul was a long-time member of St. David’s Episcopal Church in Aurora and served as the financial chairman for more than 20 years. Paul and Kate moved to Columbus in April 2017.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Kate; children, Kim (Mark) Dresch, Brad (Kate) Milliman, both of Springfield, Illinois, Matt Milliman of Minneapolis; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother, Bill Milliman; sister-in-law, Twylla Milliman, both of Des Moines, Iowa; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harry Jr. and Bob Milliman; and sister-in-law, Barbara Milliman.

The memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 29, 2018 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 2651 California Street, Columbus, with the Rev. Marc Vance officiating. Family and friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at the church. In keeping with the family’s wishes, cremation will take place.
