North girls golfers looking to land on podium

Columbus North realizes winning a girls golf state championship this weekend might be a longshot, but a podium finish could be within reach.

The Bull Dogs are ranked No. 5 in the final coaches poll of the season. The top four earn spots on the medals stand.

"It’s always a goal to finish in the top four," North coach Scott Seavers said. "But I know this year, the top four teams are pretty elite, and it would take a pretty good effort for us to get to that level. Those four teams have posted some consistently good scores all year long. But it’s possible."

No. 1 Zionsville, No. 2 Evansville North and No. 3 Homestead are the favorites, along with No. 4 Carmel, which will be playing on its home Prairie View course. All 15 teams and 25 individuals will play 18 holes both Friday and Saturday.

The Bull Dogs are coming off a championship in Saturday’s Lapel Regional. They shot 333 at Edgewood Golf Club in Anderson.

"(Prairie View) is a lot tougher course, but we’re looking forward to it," Seavers said. "We did just enough on Saturday to win and will hopefully take that same mindset into this weekend and do our very best."

Columbus North will tee off on No. 1 from 10:27 to 11:03 a.m. Friday. Saturday’s tee times will be determined after the first round is complete.

Senior Alex Munnicha will be playing in her fourth state finals, while her sister Nathaly will play in her second. Junior Annie Anderson played one of the two days at state last year. Sophomore Yestika Nischol and freshman Ella Wilks will make their state debuts.

"It’s a new experience for two of them," Seavers said. "I’m looking forward to see how they react to the pressure. It’s a lot more serious and a lot tougher course, but they have to get some experience sometime."
