Calvary Community Church will celebrate its 43rd anniversary with a guest speaker, Pastor Chris LeBrun, a former Columbus resident now of Lawrence, Kansas, where he co-pastors Eagle Rock Church with his wife Sallie.
LeBrun, once part of the ministerial staff at Calvary, will speak during the 10:30 a.m. service at the church, 1031 Chestnut St., Columbus.
Bishop Steven L. Thompson of Indianapolis will speak at a special 4 p.m. Sunday service at Calvary.
Bishop Charles A. Sims and his wife, Pastor Jane Sims, launched the Calvary Sunday School Ministry at the Oxford Square Apartment Complex Club House in Columbus in February 1975.
The ministerial couple said the Holy Spirit showed them that many local youngsters were not attending any church. The duo had led a weekly, 15-minute local radio broadcast, “The Church of the Air,” since 1974.
A significant part of the Sims’ ministry through the years has been mentoring leaders and shaping pastors for other churches and ministries. At least half a dozen area ministers now pastoring began serving under the Simses at Calvary.
Calvary has supported mission efforts in the Philippines, Kenya, Nigeria, Liberia, Germany, France, Ethiopia and Rome, Italy, with Bishop Charles Sims ministering in many of these places. The bishop now oversees an Indiana diocese with 60 churches.
