North Vernon man arrested on drug-related charges after traffic stop

NORTH VERNON — North Vernon police arrested a local man on multiple drug-related charges after a traffic stop for an equipment violation early this morning.

Officer Isaac Barkes made the traffic stop of a vehicle driven by William B. Michaels III, 24, North Vernon, at 12:56 a.m. Tuesday, said Sgt. Andrew Richmond, North Vernon Police Department spokesman.

Sgt. Kyle Hall assisted Barkes in administering a drug recognition evaluation of the driver, which revealed Michaels was operating his vehicle under the influence of a controlled substance, Richmond said.

A search revealed that Michaels possessed marijuana, psilocybin mushrooms, digital scales and other drug paraphernalia, Richmond said. The items were confiscated and Michaels’ vehicle was impounded.

Michaels was arrested on preliminary charges of felony possession of a controlled substance, and misdemeanor charges of maintaining a common nuisance, possession of paraphernalia, operating a vehicle while intoxicated and possession of marijuana, Richmond said.

He is being held in the Jennings County Jail in lieu of $1,055 cash bond, Richmond said.
