Teacher’s advice: ‘Embrace the opportunities’

Jonathan Titus is an experienced English teacher at Jennings County High School, and has taught for many years.

He has also served in the United States Navy, and now enjoys spending time with his wife and inspiring the next generation.

Here are some interesting things to know about one of the respected teachers at Jennings County High School.

Education background: Indiana State University for six years (two times; four years, then later two) to earn Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. He also earned a Master of Arts degree from Nova Southeastern in Fort Lauderale, Florida. Titus also attended Naval Officer Candidate School to earn his commission.

Decision to become a teacher: “The desire to continue serving the United States in a different way and the hope of making a difference for young people,” Titus said.

Favorite memories of teaching: “I have over four full scrapbooks of thank you notes from students — each a special memory. It is also quite special when former students ask me to officiate their weddings,” he said.

People that have inspired him: “I have been inspired by family members — including my best friend, who just happens to be my wife; many teachers, coaches and professors; church leaders, coworkers and friends,” Titus said. “I find inspiration from the fantastic administrators and incredible staff I work with each day and from my students as well!”

The most important thing he has learned: “To follow my dreams. I am a dreamer. I have always been a dreamer. If I want to go somewhere or learn something or do something I ‘go for it.’ God created a great big wonderful world and I want to experience it,” Titus said.

Hobbies: “I serve as the chaplain of Hope’s American Legion post. I am blessed to do some radio work calling area high school basketball games with Sam Simmermaker for WCSI,” Titus said. “I love hiking and biking and our family travels as time allows.”

Advice he gives to students: “I tell my students every year to ‘not let their education get in the way of their education.’ What I mean is that we can learn everywhere we go if we just embrace the opportunities. Get involved in life and learning is all around.”
